Case Study : Smart Card Commerce
Loading SmartCards over the Internet ...
Problem
Wells Fargo wanted to pioneer use of Smart Cards in San Francisco, but no software mechanism existed allowing users to connect readers to their PC's to manage transfer funds from their accounts onto the smart cards.
Solution
Stonegate developed Netscape plug-in allowing a Java applet to communicate with the smart card reader's "C" library interface. The resulting functionality allowed users to read the balance on their card, transfer money onto the card (up to its limit), and make purchases with certain vendors online.
It was the first successful Internet implementation.
