Case Study : Java DB Connectivity
The first releases of Java could not connect to mainstream databases ...
Problem
When the first versions of the Java programming language were published, JDBC existed only as an emerging specification. There were no built in methods allowing Java applications to communicate with enterprise databases. Ability to interact with the mainstay database systems was an absolute requirement in order for Java to gain acceptance as a viable programming language.

Solution
Stonegate used Java's ability to interface with the "C" programming language to write a library of classes programmers could use to make familiar and friendly calls to database API's. These libraries were widely used for the two years it eventually took for the JDBC specification to become a reality, when vendors such as Sybase, Oracle, and Informix began providing primitive JDBC drivers for their products.
