Case Study : Asset Forecasting, Tracking, & Expensing
Just how much equipment have we got?
Problem
Sun Microsystems as a company grew from a few dozen employees to over four thousand in only a few years. Tracking of company and employee assets was left to individual managers within groups. Each, according to his or her resources, developed separate means for maintaining records. By the time the company grew to a substantial size, creation of rollup reports was difficult and time consuming.

Solution
Stonegate analysts interviewed asset managers across each of the company's planets (sub-corporations or divisions) and designed a client-server asset tracking system. The system included ties into the company's parts and prices database. The design also captured the complete lifespan of an asset, so that managers could begin tracking an item from the point of its forecast, through purchase, receipt, assignment, transfer, and ultimately, retirement. Ties to corporate financials automatically calculated expensing for qualifying (valuable) assets.
